A statement from your committee
UEA MedSoc is committed to providing equal opportunities to all students regardless of race, age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability and religion amongst other differences.
Being passionate about promoting diversity both in an educational and a social context is a stance we share with the University, as well as having zero tolerance for any kind of discrimination or harassment. We appreciate that the value of a University degree extends far beyond just a graduation certificate and given the current climate, here are a few reasons why you can choose UEA with peace of mind…
We believe that, as society representing the medical student body at UEA, we have a huge responsibility to students facing adversity to offer our help and support. This is why we have a “Voice Your Concerns” contact form where students are able to report any incidents anonymously, as well as make any suggestions. As part of UEA’s largest society, your voice is louder than you may think and we will be heard, so raise any concerns big or small! MedSoc will act as a middleman relaying any student concerns to the University and pushing for changes to be made. We will also be using social media as a platform to publicise educational material regarding topical global diversity issues to help raise awareness.
If you want to share any further thoughts, please feel free to get in touch with Dylan, our Equality and Diversity Officer.

- UEA has an equality and diversity policy in place to ensure that all students are learning in an inclusive environment where they are encouraged to celebrate and respect the differences between us. The Inclusive Education policy was introduced in 2018/19 to highlight steps the University will be taking to overcome the barriers that students from ethnic minorities might be facing. These policies are there to make sure that everyone is provided with equal opportunities whilst we work continuously to increase the diversity across our campus. For example, the proportion of BAME students at UEA has increased from 14% to 27% between 2006 and 2016 and UEA is hoping to continue this institutional growth of BAME students.
- In the statement published by the University in July 2020, it is evident that UEA is extremely keen to take on board any student feedback in order to make changes to benefit the community. For example, students are able to voice their opinion and take action if they have concerns about whether they are learning from a curriculum that is broad and representative. Faculty members, students and graduates of Norwich Medical School also wrote a letter on the need to tackle racism head on, which was published in the BMJ in July 2020.
- There is a Widening Participation team which works closely with the faculties across UEA to enable BAME students to tackle any barriers that they may face, help maximise their opportunities and encourage student success. They also work with UEA Student's Union to ensure there is maximum BAME representation in clubs and societies. Furthermore, there is a BAME ambassador scheme, which aims to make sure the lived experience of BAME students is at the centre of effort to close the degree awarding gap.
